The 128th Rochester Lilac Festival Goes Green: New Zero Waste Zones for 2026

The Rochester Lilac Festival is one of the most beloved traditions in Western New York, and the 128th edition is raising the bar. Announced on Earth Day (April 22, 2026), festival organizers have partnered with Impact Earth to launch a brand new "Full Circle" sustainability initiative that will debut when the festival opens on Friday, May 8 through Sunday, May 17, 2026 in Highland Park.

What's New: Zero Waste Zones

The centerpiece of the initiative is the introduction of designated Zero Waste Zones within the festival grounds. Each zone will feature clearly labeled receptacles for compost, recycling, and landfill waste, making it simple for visitors to sort their items correctly.

For the 2026 pilot year, Zero Waste Zones will be located in three key areas:

VIP SkyDeck — The premium viewing area will lead by example with full composting and recycling stations.

Special Events Tent — The main event space will feature dedicated waste sorting with volunteer guidance.

Lilac Locals Farmer's Market — Supporting local vendors and sustainable practices in one spot.

Trained volunteers called "Trash Talkers" from Impact Earth will be stationed at each zone to guide festivalgoers and answer questions. The goal is to make sustainable choices easy, approachable, and accessible for everyone.

The "Full Circle" Lifecycle

Here is where the initiative gets its name: compostable materials collected during the festival will be transported for processing and later returned to Monroe County Parks as nutrient-rich soil to support future plantings. The waste from the festival literally feeds the park that hosts it. If the pilot year is successful, organizers plan to expand Zero Waste Zones to additional areas of the festival grounds in future years.

"This is about more than reducing waste. It's about giving back to the park that gives so much to our community," said Jenny LoMaglio, Executive Producer of the Rochester Lilac Festival. "With hundreds of thousands of visitors coming through Highland Park each year, we all play a role in protecting it."

Other Sustainability Practices

The Zero Waste Zones build on eco-friendly practices introduced in recent years:

Free Water Fill Station — Presented by Highland Hospital, the fill station lets visitors refill reusable water bottles on-site, reducing single-use plastic.

Recyclable Containers — Almost all bars at the festival exclusively offer aluminum cans or recyclable containers, including all Pepsi products. Wine slushies are served in paper cups with paper straws, and participating food vendors use eco-friendly cutlery and plates.

2026 Lilac Festival by the Numbers

The 128th Rochester Lilac Festival is shaping up to be massive:

  • More than 100 musical performances across multiple stages
  • 300+ juried arts and craft vendors
  • Kids' activities, food vendors, and the star of the show: the fragrant lilac blossoms
  • 500,000+ visitors expected over the 10-day run
  • Free general admission (VIP and special event tickets available separately)

Festival Dates and Details

Dates: Friday, May 8 through Sunday, May 17, 2026

How to Make the Most of It

Go on a weekday. Weekends draw the biggest crowds. If you can visit on a Tuesday or Wednesday, you will have more space to enjoy the lilacs and browse vendors.

Bring a reusable water bottle. Take advantage of the free fill station and skip the plastic.

Check the music schedule. With 100+ performances, there is something for every taste. The lineup is posted on roclilacfest.com before the festival opens.

Explore beyond the main path. Highland Park has over 1,200 lilac bushes representing 500+ varieties. Wander the side paths to find quieter spots and stunning blooms.

Support local vendors. The Lilac Locals Farmer's Market is a great place to pick up local produce, baked goods, and handmade items.
