Thousands of runners took to the streets of Rochester for the 2026 Flower City Challenge, racing through Park Avenue, Highland Park, and downtown. Here's the full recap.

Rochester's Biggest Spring Race Drew Record Crowds

The 2026 Rochester Regional Health Flower City Challenge brought thousands of runners, walkers, and spectators to downtown Rochester on Sunday, April 26. Starting and finishing at Parcel 5 on East Main Street, the event featured a half marathon (13.1 miles), a 5K (3.1 miles), and a Kids 1/2 Mile race that had families cheering from the sidelines all morning.

Organized by Rochester Regional Health, YellowJacket Racing, and Fleet Feet, the Flower City Challenge has become one of the most anticipated spring events in the Rochester running community. The 2026 edition delivered perfect racing weather and a course that showcased some of Rochester's most scenic neighborhoods.

The Course: A Tour of Rochester's Best Streets

The half marathon and 5K courses started at Parcel 5 and wound through some of the city's most beloved neighborhoods. Runners passed through the historic Susan B. Anthony neighborhood, headed downtown along the Genesee River, then turned east through the tree-lined streets of the Park Avenue neighborhood with its shops, restaurants, and walkable charm.

The half marathon continued through Highland Park, where lilac buds are already forming ahead of the 128th Rochester Lilac Festival opening May 8, before looping back through the South Wedge neighborhood known for its independent shops and craft beer scene. The course gave out-of-town runners a genuine tour of what makes Rochester's neighborhoods so walkable and vibrant.

Race Day Schedule and Highlights

The Rochester Regional Health Half Marathon kicked off at 7:30 AM, followed by the Flower City 5K at 7:40 AM. The Kids 1/2 Mile started at 10:30 AM, giving families a chance to get their youngest runners across a finish line with the same energy and excitement as the adults.

The post-race party at Parcel 5 featured live music, food vendors, and the Athlete Village with recovery stations. Virtual options were also available for runners who could not make it to Rochester on race day, keeping the community spirit alive across the region.

Why Rochester Runners Love This Event

The Flower City Challenge is more than a race. It is a celebration of Rochester's running community and the neighborhoods that make this city special. The course intentionally routes through areas that highlight the city's parks, historic architecture, and local business districts.

For runners visiting from out of town, the event doubles as an introduction to Rochester's quality of life. Many participants explore the best restaurants in Rochester after the race, grab brunch at one of Rochester's best brunch spots along the course route, or check out the craft beer scene in the South Wedge and neighborhood breweries.

Planning for Next Year

The Flower City Challenge typically takes place on the last Sunday of April. Registration opens in the fall, and the half marathon spots fill up fast. If you are considering moving to Rochester or just looking for a reason to visit, the Flower City Challenge weekend is one of the best times to experience the city's energy and community spirit.
