Best Hiking Trails Near Rochester, NY

Rochester sits at the intersection of the Genesee River valley, Lake Ontario's shoreline, and the northern edge of the Finger Lakes — creating a diverse landscape that offers surprisingly excellent hiking. From urban nature walks to challenging gorge trails, here are the best hikes in the Rochester area.

In the City

Turning Point ParkTurning Point Park is Rochester's #1 rated trail on TripAdvisor, and for good reason. The 2.5-mile boardwalk winds through lush wetlands along the Genesee River, offering intimate wildlife encounters and a sense of wilderness that feels impossible for a city park. Look for great blue herons, bald eagles, and painted turtles.

Genesee Riverway Trail — This 24-mile paved trail follows the Genesee River from Lake Ontario through downtown Rochester and south into the countryside. It connects many of Rochester's best parks and neighborhoods, passing Highland Park, the High Falls gorge, and Turning Point Park along the way.

Erie Canal Trail — The Erie Canalway Trail offers flat, scenic walking and biking along the historic canal. The section through Pittsford is particularly charming, with views of lock operations and canal boats.

Within 30 Minutes

Corbett's Glen Nature Park — A hidden gem in Brighton featuring a beautiful railroad tunnel, creek crossings, and a waterfall. The 2-mile loop is moderate and perfect for families.

Durand Eastman Park — Located along Lake Ontario's shore, this park offers wooded trails with lake views, a beach, and a zoo-adjacent location near Seneca Park Zoo.

Mendon Ponds Park — One of the largest parks in Monroe County, Mendon Ponds offers over 15 miles of trails through glacial terrain, wetlands, and forests. The chickadees here are famous for eating out of your hand.

Letchworth State Park — Known as the "Grand Canyon of the East," Letchworth is about an hour south of Rochester and features three major waterfalls on the Genesee River, with over 66 miles of trails offering spectacular gorge views.

Trail Tips

Rochester's trails are best from May through October, though winter hiking is popular at Mendon Ponds and along the canal. Bring bug spray in summer — the wetland trails can be buggy. Most city parks are free and don't require permits.
